Our Story
In the 6th century AD, against all odds, Theodora rose from humble beginnings to co-rule the Byzantine empire with her husband, Emperor Justinian I. During their reign the empire reached its territorial peak: spanning from modern day Andalusia in southern Spain, to the old Kingdom of Lazica in western Georgia, from the majestic Dolomites in northern Italy to the ancient city of Thebes in Egypt.
Together, they became one of the most influential couples in history not only for their role in the empire’s expansion, but also for their significant contributions to art, architecture, law and women’s rights. Their legacy continues to shape our world to this very day. It was their love for each other and their partnership of true collaboration that made this possible: Theodora was Justinian’s confidante, his advisor, and the quiet force behind many of his boldest decisions and initiatives.
Theodora Wine Bar is a celebration of Theodora’s little-known but extraordinary legacy, the power of love, and a reflection of many things that we hold dear. It is a space rooted in history, a place for lovers of art, fine wine, and good company. Every detail has been thoughtfully chosen to reflect the beauty and richness of the Byzantine Empire at its height. From the carefully curated wine list that spans the breadth of the empire, to the elegant design that combines classical influences with modern touches, every aspect is a testament to our shared passions in life and our love for the region which we are fortunate to call our home.
The vision was born on our motorbiking adventures across the old empire - from the majestic mosaics of Ravenna to the awe inspiring architecture of Istanbul’s Hagia Sofia - and the discovery of wonderful food and wine along the way. We invite you to join us on our journey, step inside, relax, unwind, discover a new favourite wine, and experience a small taste of T & J’s legacy for yourself.

We want to give you the opportunity to travel (by the glass) with us around the lands of the old Byzantine Empire. Why not enjoy a local Istrian treasure today, and then journey to the foothills of Mount Etna tomorrow?
We are excited to present a diverse selection of grape varieties that we personally love. We carry over 50 labels, all available by the glass, allowing you the opportunity to taste and experience something new.
Many of these varieties we first discovered on our motorcycle adventures around the region. The selection will continue to evolve as we continue to travel and discover new gems.

Our Food
Chef Mia has curated two small but diverse menus - our à la carte Chef's Menu, and our Bar Menu. All dishes are prepared in house, and are accompanied by our wine pairing suggestions.
Our focus is on showcasing the best fresh, local ingredients from the land, garden and sea. The menus include some classics, some pairings that come with a twist, and options aplenty for meat, fish & plant lovers. All are presented with a touch of Byzantine flair!
Our Chef's Menu is rooted in Byzantine traditions, and features seasonal appetizers and feasts made for sharing. The highlight of our bar menu is our Tasting Selection, where small plates can be enjoyed, perfectly paired with a glass of wine, or combined as a tasting menu. Oysters are the star at weekends (Fri - Sun), and our breakfast, bar classics and desserts are always available.
